Antoni Tapies
nocturn matinal
5 May – 7 July 2012
Press release

Marco and Laura Guastalla's Galleria Guastalla Centro Arte pays homage to the great Catalan artist Antoni Tapies, who passed away on February 6 in Barcelona, with an exhibition entitled "Nocturn matinal" of original works on paper including etchings and lithographs retouched by hand by artist.

A key figure of the international informal art, within this current Tàpies played the role of intermediary between the surrealist culture of its beginnings, in contact with Mirò and Picasso, and the subsequent object experiences, which anticipated the experiments of Arte Povera . His paintings, his sculptures, his graphic works have in fact marked a watershed between the historical generations of art and the neo-avant-gardes.

The dominant feature of his work is the use of materials, which give depth to the works, which are generally non-figurative, with dull and monotonous colors but of great intensity, deriving precisely from the sculptural quality of the surface. He intervenes on the surface with marks, scratches and graffiti, creating an effect similar to that of peeling walls, full of events and vicissitudes; sometimes on these surfaces he traces signs, symbols, letters.

If the presence of symbols could recall a conception of a spiritual type, the artist instead defines himself as a realist, moving on an objective level.

The exhibition examines in particular an aspect of Tapies' artistic production, that of the graphic work, which has held great importance in the context of his work, offering a selection of works of intense quality: around 20 works will be exhibited etchings, lithographs, gauffrages, in some of these, the artist intervened manually with watercolor and tempera, modifying the initial work. The works belong to two folders, which Tapies created in the 1970s, one entitled "Nocturn matinal" and the other entitled "Clau del foc", and are published in the Catalog raisonné published by the prestigious Swiss publishing house ErKer.

The aim is to investigate one aspect of the work of one of the major protagonists of 20th century European art through this collection.
